A Profile Review Meeting is a helpful starting point for high school students and families who want to understand where a student stands now and how to move forward thoughtfully toward the college process.

Profile Review Meetings are designed to meet students where they are developmentally and strategically throughout high school.

While every meeting includes a review of the student's academic and extracurricular profile, the focus changes by grade level. The goal is to give students and families age-appropriate information, tools, and next steps without creating unnecessary pressure too early in the process.

Before we meet

Before the meeting, I ask families to provide:

a current transcript, including courses the student is taking or plans to take
a list of activities, awards, honors, athletics, clubs, leadership, community service, internships, research, performing or fine arts, hobbies, passions, family responsibilities, and other meaningful ways the student spends their time
two writing samples from an English or humanities class that the student feels proud of
and any available standardized testing, including SAT, ACT, AP, or IB scores

When applicable, families may also share an IEP, 504 Plan, or neuropsychological evaluation so that I can better understand how the student learns.

Together, these materials allow me to look at the student as a whole: how they appear on paper, what their academic trajectory looks like, what matters to them, and what their voice sounds like.

What you leave with

Most importantly, the Profile Review Meeting gives students and families an opportunity to ask questions and leave with a clearer sense of direction. Depending on when we meet, that might mean thinking through the next year or creating a two- or three-year plan leading into the college application process.

The goal is not to prescribe a perfect path, but to help the student understand their current profile and make intentional choices about what comes next.

For some families, a single Profile Review Meeting may provide exactly the guidance they need. For others, an annual review from ninth through twelfth grade can create a natural progression.

Who is a Profile Review Meeting for?

Profile Review Meetings are designed for high school students and their families at any point from ninth through twelfth grade. The focus of the meeting changes depending on the student's grade level, goals, and where they are in the college planning process.

What should we submit before the meeting?

We typically ask for the student's current transcript and course plan, a résumé or list of activities, awards, interests, hobbies, service, athletics, leadership, work, family responsibilities, and other meaningful experiences. We also request two recent writing samples, any available standardized test scores, and, when applicable, an IEP, 504 Plan, or neuropsychological evaluation.

Do we need to already have a college list?

No. Younger students are not expected to have a college list at all. Even for juniors and seniors, the purpose of the meeting is often to help clarify and strengthen the list. We can discuss schools already on the family's radar while also identifying the kinds of colleges, programs, environments, and opportunities the student may want to explore.

What will we leave the meeting with?

Every Profile Review Meeting is intended to provide a clearer understanding of where the student currently stands and what should come next. Depending on grade level, that may include recommendations around academics, activities, testing, college exploration, visits, essays, recommendations, financial aid, or application strategy. Most importantly, families leave with a practical roadmap and specific next steps.

Is this a one-time meeting or something we can do every year?

Either. A family may schedule a Profile Review Meeting for a specific question or point in the process, or use it as an annual check-in throughout high school. An annual review can be especially helpful because the conversation evolves naturally from understanding the process in ninth grade, to exploration in tenth, preparation in eleventh, and application strategy and execution in twelfth grade.
