Christine Chapman and Grace Mitchell, two experienced admissions professionals, read your essay and help you understand what is working, what is getting lost, and where it can become stronger.

  • This is not an editing service.
  • We are not going to rewrite your essay for you.
  • We are going to help you understand how your writing is landing so that you can make it better.

What You Receive

Two Readers, Two Perspectives

Christine and Grace both read your essay, starting with the big picture:

  1. Does this sound like you?
  2. Where do we lose the thread?
  3. What feels memorable?
  4. Does the essay actually answer the question being asked?
  5. Is there a stronger idea hiding inside the draft?

A Recorded Review

A recording that walks you through our reactions, explaining more than a comment in the margin ever could. Pause it, replay it, and come back to it while you revise.

Your Essay, Marked Up

Your essay back in a shared Google Doc with detailed comments, questions, and suggestions. We are not handing you a rewritten essay. We are giving you a road map for revision.

Plus one follow-up review once you revise.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Send us your essay.

Share it in a Google Doc, along with the prompt and the word or character limit.

  2. 2

    We both read it.

Christine and Grace each bring their own perspective to the writing.

  3. 3

Your review arrives within three days.

The recording and your commented Google Doc.

  4. 4

You revise, and we take one more look.

You make the decisions, because the finished essay still needs to belong to you. Send the revision back for your follow-up review.

Why Two Readers?

Because there is no single perfect reaction to an essay.

One reader may notice structure while another focuses on voice, and that conversation can tell you far more than a list of corrections.

You are not simply receiving edits.

You are gaining access to the reader experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the review take?

You will receive your initial recorded review and commented Google Doc within three days of submitting your essay and materials.

How do I send my essay after checkout?

After checkout, you will receive instructions for submitting your essay by email.

Please send the essay along with the original application prompt and any applicable word or character limit.

How finished does my essay need to be?

Your essay can be at almost any stage of the writing process.

That said, The Essay Review is most useful once you have at least a rough draft. You do not need to feel good about it, and it definitely does not need to feel finished. We just need enough on the page to understand the direction you are considering and give you meaningful feedback.

Should I include the essay prompt and word limit?

Absolutely.

Please send the exact prompt as it appears on the application, along with the word or character limit.

We need to understand what the application is actually asking in order to evaluate whether your essay is accomplishing what it needs to accomplish.

What kinds of essays can I submit?

The Essay Review is available year-round for a wide range of application writing, including:

  • Undergraduate college application essays
  • College supplemental essays
  • Transfer application essays
  • Graduate school personal statements and statements of purpose
  • Private school and boarding school application essays
  • Scholarship essays
  • Other admissions-related written responses
Who will review my essay?

Your initial Essay Review includes perspectives from Christine Chapman and Grace Mitchell.

The goal is to give you more than one reader's reaction to your writing. We may notice different things, ask different questions, or react differently to a particular section, and that conversation can be an important part of understanding how your writing is landing.

What exactly will I receive?

Your initial review includes:

  • Recorded feedback on your essay
  • Detailed comments and suggestions in a Google Doc
  • Feedback on areas such as voice, structure, clarity, focus, storytelling, and overall effectiveness
  • Specific questions and suggestions to guide your revision

After you revise, you may submit the same essay for one included follow-up review, which may include a Loom-style recording, additional Google Doc comments, and final suggestions or tweaks.

Will you edit or rewrite my essay for me?

No.

We may demonstrate how a sentence or section could be approached differently, suggest moving material around, or comment on specific language, but we will not rewrite the essay for you.

The goal is to give you enough direction to make thoughtful revisions while ensuring that the final essay remains your work and your voice.

What happens after I receive my first review?

Watch the recording, work through the comments in your Google Doc, and revise your essay.

Once you have completed that revision, you can send the essay back for your included follow-up review.

Is the second review another full review with both Christine and Grace?

No.

The substantial two-reader analysis happens during the initial review.

Your included follow-up is a more focused final review of the revised essay and may consist of a Loom-style recording, Google Doc comments, and final suggestions or adjustments.

What if I decide to write an entirely new essay after receiving feedback?

The included follow-up covers a revision of the essay originally submitted.

If you decide to start over with a substantially different essay, story, or application response, that would be considered a new Essay Review.

Can I submit more than one essay?

Yes, but each Essay Review covers one essay.

If you would like feedback on additional essays or supplements, each one can be purchased as a separate Essay Review, subject to monthly availability.

Do I need to be a current Chapman Education client?

No.

The Essay Review is a standalone service and is available to students and applicants who are not currently working with Chapman Education.

Is this only for college seniors?

Not at all.

The Essay Review is available to private school applicants, undergraduate applicants, transfer applicants, graduate school applicants, and other students completing admissions-related writing.

Is The Essay Review available all year?

Yes.

The Essay Review is offered year-round, with availability limited to 20 reviews per month so that we can give each submission the attention it deserves.

How much does The Essay Review cost?

The Essay Review is $500 per essay.

That includes the initial two-reader review, recorded feedback, detailed Google Doc comments, and one follow-up review of your revised essay.
